Afraid to Suffer

Pain killers.

They’re pills designed to prevent you from experiencing pain.

“People Pain Killers” (PPK).

They’re people who try hard not to “let” you experience pain.

They both are dangerous because they are ADDICTING and DISTORT REALITY.

I use “let” because  they think they can control it. Maybe, the PPK would say, “… not to ‘have’ you experience pain.” and we all know you do.

As a teacher, I want my kids, whether age 3 or 23, to suffer a bit to find the solution.

IT MAY FRUSTRATE THEM. IT ALSO EMPOWERS THEM TO DIG IN.

As a coach, I want my athletes to learn what is correct because they have experienced the incorrect.

IT MAY HURT THEM IN THE SHORT-TERM. IT ALSO EMPOWERS THEM TO BE HUMBLE.

As a parent, I want my kids to have to pedal all the way up the mountain on their own, even if they are crying for water.

IT MAY BE UNCOMFORTABLE. IT ALSO TEACHES THEM TO NEVER GIVE UP.

And I don’t want you, you PPK, stepping in and helping them by making it easier.

Easy isn’t beautiful. Easy isn’t magical. Easy isn’t art. Easy isn’t in academics or athletics.

Easy isn’t the new hard (but, don’t give me that HTFU crap either).

We seek easy when we have no meaning or purpose.

Find what makes you smile, wiggle, dance…actually find what scares the crap out of you because that’s probably what you’re built to overcome.
